Happy Summer friends and family! We hope you're all enjoying the hot weather and having the best summer adventures. We've been loving the warmer weather and being outside in our backyard. I apologize for this post being a couple of weeks late, but when we got back from our trip over Memorial Day weekend, we were without internet! We had to go a whole week without it and then get all caught up last week. So without further ado...
Over the Memorial Day weekend, we took a road trip up to Canada to see Niagara Falls! We started our trek Friday afternoon with Wrigley in tow. Our first stop of our road trip was Toledo, OH to visit our family there. We had a lovely BBQ and some good quality time with our family + a refreshing night sleep to finish our journey out to Niagara on Saturday. We ran in to a bit of a snag getting in to Canada from Detroit (it took 2 hours to cross the Ambassador Bridge + an unnecessary stop in customs) but we eventually made it out to our cute bed and breakfast at in St. Catharines. We stayed at the Springbank House and highly recommend making reservations there if you want to stay on the Canadian side of The Falls and have your dog with you.
After some freshening up, we made our way out to the gorgeous lakeside town of Niagara on the Lake. It might be one of our favorite towns ever. We got some gelato at Il Gelato di Carlotta and walked around the town in awe at all the cute shops and beautiful houses. We eventually did a loop and ended up in Queens Royal Park on Lake Ontario!
After spending some relaxing time at the lake, we made our way towards The Falls on Niagara Parkway. This is the most scenic route to The Falls and really the only way we recommend going. Our philosophy is "always take the scenic route." You'll find the most beautiful houses, fruit/vegetable stands, wineries, and the Niagara Park. Inside the park you'll come across many trails, the botanical gardens, and the Floral Clock. You also get to drive along the Niagara River and there are a few lookout spots that are quite incredible. So as you can imagine, this is really the way to go. We finally arrived at The Falls after this amazing drive and were speechless.
After getting some good exploring in, we made our way back on Niagara Parkway towards our B&B and made a quick stop off at the Floral Clock.
We spent the night eating pizza, drinking wine, and watching Breakfast at Tiffany's in our suite at the Springbank House. The next morning we slept in a little bit and made our way back to Niagara on the Lake for some breakfast and shopping. We got crepes and pastries at Nina Gelateria and bought some goodies at a couple of the local shops. It was then time for us to head back to The Falls one more time for a relaxing afternoon with a picnic.
We had the most amazing view of the falls while eating and enjoyed the hot day in the shade with the mist from The Falls cooling us off. We picked up some lunch meat & cheese, bread, and fruit from Lococo's Fruit and Veggies. After about an hour of eating and napping we walked down the path of the The Falls that we had not seen the night before. We put Wrigley's rain coat on to keep him dry and he was the star of the show. Everyone loved him and he loved all the attention!
It was then time for us to head back in to the US to head out to a friend's house for a BBQ near Buffalo, NY. It always makes a trip so much better when you get to see friends and family that you don't get to see very often. We love experiencing new and exciting things but it makes it even better when you can mix in a little bit of comfort from ones you love. We made the long journey back to Chicago on Memorial Day, which took 11 hours due to lots of doggy pit stops and grabbing some hot dogs at Duly's Place in Detroit, but we made it back safe and sound! All 3 of us had quite the amazing time, especially Wrigley. He absolutely loved The Falls and beat the car sickness!
