Location: Detroit, MI, USA
Our 2017 travel season has finally begun! Our first trip of the year was a road trip out to Michigan for a family reunion. We left at lunch on a Friday and returned Sunday evening, so it was a short but very sweet trip. Instead of going straight to Detroit, we decided to stop off in Toledo, OH first to have dinner with some of our family. We ate at our favorite place in all of Toledo, Shorty's True American Roadhouse. Caleb and I shared a 3 meet combo tray of some pulled pork, brisket, and chicken with some mac and cheese, green beans, and lots and lots of corn bread. Shorty's has the best corn bread in the world. My cousin told me they shared their secret with her on how they make it so good...they use cake batter! I'm definitely going to be giving it a try at home sometime to see how close I can replicate it. After we stuffed ourselves full we headed up to Detroit to check in to our hotel, the Hotel St. Regis. We stayed there during our last visit to Detroit, and loved it. It's in a great area and is a very historic hotel. Martin Luther King Jr use to stay there when he would visit Detroit! We always get the best deal on room rates there by booking with Expedia.
The following morning we went to breakfast at The Hudson Cafe, which is located downtown on Woodward Ave. You guys, Woodward Ave looks amazing now! They were doing a ton of construction on it last year when we visited and a lot of it was finally done when we went a couple weeks ago. The people mover is open and looks like such a fun/easy way to ride around town and there are so many shops, restaurants, and hang out spots down there now! We keep saying it over and over again but Detroit really is on the up and up and is worth visiting soon! After breakfast, we walked around the new park area on Woodward and grabbed some coffee at the Roasting Plant. Their espresso was absolute perfection making my iced latte extra nice on a hot day.
After our nice slow morning, we made our way out to our family reunion. We had the best time meeting some family that we didn't know and catching up with all my aunts, uncles, and cousins. It was a wonderful relaxing Saturday out in the country filled with great company.
On Sunday morning, we grabbed a quick breakfast at Great Lakes Coffee of iced lattes and croissants then headed over to Belle Isle. We've been wanting to check out Belle Isle for a few years now and finally the time and weather allowed! We wandered through the Conservatory and the Aquarium then made our way out to a fishing pier that had some spectacular views of the Detroit River and skyline. We were only there for a little over an hour but it was very enjoyable. For those who have more time and enjoy outdoor activities you can go for an awesome run or bike ride around the isle. For those who love being on the water you can rent a sailboat or a kayak for a few hours. We're definitely planning on renting some kayaks next time we're out there!
It was then time for us to head back to Chicago, but as usual, we can't wait to return to the Motor City!
Have you ever been to Detroit? If so, what is your favorite thing to do in this historic city?
